McMinn County is mourning the heartbreaking and unexpected loss of Dr. Julie Goodin, the recently appointed Director of Schools, whose passing has left a profound impact on the entire community. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through McMinn County Schools (MCS), where Dr. Goodin’s leadership, compassion, and dedication to education had already begun to shape a bright future.
The district confirmed on Thursday that Dr. Goodin passed away unexpectedly, just months after officially stepping into her role as Director of Schools in July. She had been hired into the position on June 27, 2025, following a distinguished career in education and leadership within the McMinn County School System.
In a heartfelt statement, MCS officials expressed deep sorrow: “It is with a great deal of sadness that we share that our Director of Schools, Dr. Julie Goodin, has passed away unexpectedly. Dr. Goodin assumed the leadership of our school system this past July after previously serving in numerous other positions. She was an incredibly talented and driven leader who cared deeply about our students, staff, and families. She will be dearly missed.”
Dr. Goodin was not just an administrator but a lifelong educator, mentor, and advocate for students. Before becoming director, she served as the Supervisor of Secondary Education since 2023, where she worked tirelessly to improve curriculum, strengthen support systems, and champion student success across the district. Her colleagues recall her as a forward-thinking leader who combined innovation with compassion—a rare balance that inspired those around her to strive for excellence.
A proud native of McMinn County, Dr. Goodin’s roots in the community ran deep. She was a standout basketball player at McMinn Central High School, where her determination and leadership on the court foreshadowed the strength she would later bring to her career. Her athletic ability earned her the opportunity to play basketball at Clemson University, where she continued to develop her leadership skills and commitment to teamwork. After completing her education, Dr. Goodin returned home to McMinn County to give back to the community that had shaped her, beginning her journey as a teacher and later advancing into school administration.
Throughout her career, she was known for her genuine care for people. Whether mentoring teachers, encouraging students, or working alongside staff, Dr. Goodin led with both her head and her heart. Her colleagues described her as a steady, compassionate presence who always took the time to listen and support those around her. She believed in the power of education to change lives and was deeply devoted to ensuring that every student had access to opportunities for success.
In the wake of her passing, MCS officials have emphasized the importance of coming together to grieve and heal as a community. “We understand that this news will bring a range of emotions for many in our school community,” the district stated. “Support services will be available for students and staff who may need assistance in the days ahead.”
To give space for mourning and reflection, McMinn County Schools announced the closure of all schools and district offices on Friday, October 24, noting: “Out of respect, and to allow our staff and students time to grieve, schools and the district office will be closed. This day will be an optional professional development day across the district to allow our faculty and staff time to gather, receive grief counseling, and lean on one another.”
As the district begins to navigate this period of loss, the McMinn County School Board held an emergency meeting Thursday evening and unanimously appointed Melasawn Knight, the Federal Programs Supervisor, as the interim Director of Schools.
Dr. Goodin’s passing leaves behind a legacy of excellence, compassion, and service. Her influence will continue to resonate through the lives of the students she inspired, the educators she mentored, and the community she loved so deeply.
Though her time as Director was tragically short, Dr. Julie Goodin’s vision and heart will continue to guide McMinn County Schools for years to come. Her life serves as a reminder of the profound difference one dedicated educator can make—a legacy built not just on leadership, but on love, purpose, and unwavering commitment to others.
