It is with deep sadness that Rockland County mourns the passing of Vincent “Vince” Altieri, a respected public servant, former county official, and Spring Valley Village Judge who dedicated much of his life to improving his community. Vince passed away recently, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of leadership, integrity, and devotion to public service that touched countless lives throughout Rockland County and beyond.
For nearly two decades, Vince Altieri served the people of Rockland County with distinction, compassion, and professionalism. His long career in government was defined by a steadfast commitment to doing what was right for his community and by a belief in the power of public service to make a meaningful difference. Vince first joined Rockland County government in 2007, when he was appointed Director of Intergovernmental Relations in the County Executive’s Office. In that role, he worked tirelessly to strengthen partnerships between local, state, and federal agencies, ensuring that the needs and concerns of Rockland residents were always represented and addressed.
Vince’s exceptional leadership and knowledge soon led him to a new chapter in his career as the Executive Director of the Rockland County Drainage Agency, a position he held for approximately 14 years. During his tenure, he oversaw critical infrastructure, drainage, and environmental projects that improved safety and sustainability throughout the county. His efforts played an essential role in protecting homes and neighborhoods from flooding, maintaining the integrity of local waterways, and promoting responsible development practices. Those who worked alongside him recall that he approached every challenge with patience, thoughtfulness, and a solutions-oriented mindset — qualities that earned him the admiration and respect of both colleagues and community members.
Before his time in county government, Vince brought his talents to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), where he gained a reputation for his deep commitment to environmental stewardship. His work reflected his belief that the health of the community and the environment were closely connected. He was known for his practical approach to conservation and his dedication to ensuring that future generations could enjoy a cleaner, safer Rockland County.
In addition to his extensive administrative career, Vince Altieri also served as a Village Justice in Spring Valley, where he earned a reputation as a fair, level-headed, and compassionate judge. On the bench, he was known for treating everyone who appeared before him with dignity and respect. His rulings were guided not only by the law but also by empathy and a strong sense of justice. To those who appeared in his courtroom, Vince represented the best qualities of the judiciary — fairness, integrity, and understanding.
Friends and colleagues remember Vince as a man of great character and humility — someone who led with kindness and never sought the spotlight for his many accomplishments. He was a mentor to younger public servants, a loyal friend, and a man who always had time to listen. His colleagues admired his sharp mind, steady leadership, and unwavering commitment to making Rockland County a better place for all.
As Rockland County reflects on his life and legacy, there is an overwhelming sense of gratitude for Vince Altieri’s decades of service. His passing leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew him. Yet, his contributions — to government, to justice, and to the environment — will continue to benefit the community for years to come.
The Rockland County community extends its heartfelt condolences to Vince’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. His legacy of dedication, compassion, and public service will live on as an enduring testament to a life well-lived in service of others.
